That afternoon in Jesmond, Elliot Whyte finished his pint and said goodbye to his mates in Bar Blanc. He was taking his father to church in Shotton Colliery the following morning and would follow it with a Sunday roast at the Blue House. Church wasn’t his idea of a good time, but their outings meant a lot to his father, and it was one of the few times he saw his Dad as he remembered him – before the veil of dementia took hold. Whyte had no intention of turning up hungover, so having already downed six pints on Osborne Road, it was time to call it a day.

He walked past the taxi rank. Whyte lived nearby and had no need for their services. He passed Waitrose and turned left onto Acorn Road. Nipping into Tesco, he picked up a four-pack of loo roll, a new tube of toothpaste and a frozen pizza. As always, the store was rammed. Whyte once heard a rumour that the store was the most profitable Tesco in the country per square foot. Slap bang in the middle of an affluent suburb, bursting at the seams with young professionals and well-off students, the shop was never quiet.

As Whyte continued on his way for a few streets more, he thought how odd it was that he never saw Saffron Boyd around Jesmond. He knew she lived in the area but never saw her drinking on Osborne Road or down the Cradlewell. Around Acorn Road was usually so busy, you could almost guarantee running into someone you knew. Yet he’d never seen Boyd outside of work save for the occasional half-pint when they’d solved a big case – or when they needed to rally around Tennessee after his inspectors’ exam.

Whyte unlocked his door and climbed the stairs to the first floor flat he shared with some bloke called Dave. He’d lived with Dave for two years but barely knew a thing about him. Dave worked in IT and didn’t like to leave his room except to take a dump or answer the door to the Deliveroo driver. The arrangement suited Whyte; he paid half the rent but barely noticed that he even had a flatmate. At some point, he’d move on like Keaton and get a place of his own, but for now, he was happy in an ex-student let in Jesmond. The rent was reasonable, the girls were bonny, and it was always happy-hour somewhere nearby.

While the oven heated up, Whyte opened his laptop and switched on the television. Boyd had got under his skin. He didn’t fancy her, but he did find himself thinking about her often, especially after the incident on Thursday. She was quiet and mouse-like, jumping whenever a car backfired and flinching if a door slammed. Though she’d started to relax a little more in recent weeks, Whyte got the impression she was hiding something. She seemed shocked he would want to help her, confused by him standing up for her. Whyte couldn’t get his head around it.
